2 years and 9month old Ifeoluwa (Anonymous) male child who had persistent fever was treated as a case of malaria at various private hospitals before coming to LUTH, Full blood count was done at the emergency room revealed a high white cell count and abdominal examination revealed enlarged liver and spleen.
The Hematology/Oncology units were contacted and Ifeoluwa (Anonymous) was admitted into the oncology ward. Further investigation revealed Ifeoluwa had leukemia. He was to stay in the oncology ward for about 4 months.
He celebrated his 3rd birthday in the ward. He started chemotherapy and achieved remission, and was later discharged home to come for further chemotherapy his parents could not afford the cost, they had other children to feed, rent to pay, and other daily expenses.
The mother was pregnant; the father had to miss work for almost the 4 months he was on admission. He never came back for chemotherapy. He died a day after being rushed into the emergency room about 8 months later.
